One designer who knows the whole project.
Samuel Projects is the design and build practice of Jimmy Samuel van Linder. He leads every project personally and forms the connection between client, design, architectural partners, builders, installers and suppliers.
The work began with interiors: layouts, lighting plans, materials and bespoke joinery. In practice most clients did not get stuck on the choice of a tile, but on the organisation around it: which party draws what, who applies for the permit, who directs the installer and who checks that it is being built as intended.
That is why Samuel Projects is set up as one party for the entire process: design, construction drawings, technical preparation and supervision on site. Not as a large agency, but as one designer with a fixed network of specialist partners around him.
It means you speak to the same person in the first conversation, during the site meetings and at handover. Someone who knows why a wall is where it is and what happens if it moves half a metre.
Principles
The floor plan first
The biggest gain is rarely in the material and almost always in the layout. That is where every project starts.
Budget is a design question
A plan that does not fit the budget is not a plan. We discuss the figure in the first conversation, not at the end.
Materials are judged physically
Samples are viewed side by side, in the light of your own home. Not on a screen and not in a showroom under artificial light.
Drawing in advance is cheaper than solving on site
Detailing invented on site costs time, money and rarely produces the best solution.
The studio
The studio on the Overtoom in Amsterdam is where floor plans are drawn, materials are laid out side by side and clients see their design in 3D for the first time.
